Week 4

1. Vacant, I wonder where everyone is. I wonder what type of plant is behind this bench. The light post beside the bench is very sturdy looking as well as the bench itself. Metal is a sturdy material. This bench wouldn't look so solid and stationary if the base wasn't made out of metal. With all the shadows in the background, there must be a lot of tree branches that I don't see. This bench needs a companion.

2.  I see a bench with a metal base and a wooden seat empty right beside the base of a metal light post. There is sun shining on the objects from somewhere off the left side of the picture.  There is a type of plant that appears to have a pod of some sort growing off of it behind the slab of cement the light post and bench are on. The background of the picture consists of grass and a few tree trunks. Over half of the grass visible is covered by shadows from branches above the frame of the picture. The photo is in black and white and displays different values rather well.

3.  The composition of this photo is rather good.  The soft yet rough edges of the bench guide your eyes to the very interesting light post that has many different values. The lines in this picture are mostly crisp and directional. Not many of the lines are very weak.  The straight lines compliment each other while the contour lines compliment each other at the same time. The color of this photo is black and white.  There is, however, many different values.  The middle of the photo has lighter colors and the bottom has very bright whites. The frame of the bench has very dark values as well as the top third of the picture.  The light post has a dark color but carries all the values available in the picture through shadows. The objects are placed methodically so your eyes are drawn to the right side of the photo.

4. I think this photo does tell a story.  It tells people that they need to get out and meet new people.  If you never get out you won't meet new people and find the beauty in nature.  You won't be able to use this bench if you never get out and discover it. You won't be able to get new friends if you don't get out and find some new friends. A one worded title for this picture would be - Vacancy.

5. When I look at the artwork of Edgar Degas, I notice the large amount of values in them.  It seems that he purposefully tries to insert as many different values as possible. My photo has many different dark and light values in it yet it lacks the human figures that most of his art seems to posses. In his art it seems that he either uses very sharp edges or very soft edges. My photo has both sharp and soft edges so it connects to most of his work in that sense as well.
